Thames Printing Company Celebrates 70th Anniversary
Thames Printing is proud to announce that 2009 is the 70th Anniversary of the founding of our business. The company was founded in 1939, the same year FDR changed the date for Thanksgiving from Nov. 30 to Nov. 23. He explained that many had urged the shift to create a holiday not so close to Christmas. The Yankee Clipper landed in London, completing the first passenger flight over the Atlantic.

What Else Happened in 1939?
Britain and France declared war on Germany while America officially stayed neutral.
The World's Fair, which opened in New York, allowed visitors to see "The World of Tomorrow."  King George VI and Queen Elizabeth of England toured the fair. Viewed for the first time were wonders such as nylon, cellophane and television.  Rockfeller Center opened for business. It combined office space with recreation, broadcasting, shopping and entertainment facilities including Radio City Music Hall and the RCA building.  Yes, when you think about it, things have changed a lot in 70 years. But, after all this time there are some things which have remained the same.  One good thing is that Thames Printing Company is still around after 70 years of hard work and lots of dedication by everyone involved...and most importantly, caring about customers who helped us reach this milestone.

What factors affect the cost of printing paper?
There are many different types of paper available to the print buyer. Printing paper is available in both coated and uncoated varieties. Some of the factors that affect the cost of the paper are: Color, Finish / Texture, Whiteness / Brightness, Opacity, Archival Properties, Percentage of cotton fiber, Synthetic substrates and metallic coatings. In addition to the above mentioned factors, 'paper grade' has an impact on the price of paper. The higher grade coated and uncoated papers usually print better, and hold up much better during finishing operations than the lower grade papers. Also less commonly used papers are not always stocked by the paper distributors, and must be purchased in full carton quantities, which would increase the cost to the buyer. These are just some of the variables which account for the wide range of paper prices. If you are looking to keep cost down, ask your Thames Printing sales representative for suggestions on high quality, low cost paper alternatives for your next printing job.

Page Counts
Although it may seem basic to most print buyers, many people don't know that one sheet of paper counts as two pages. So, in other words one 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper is actually two pages!
